Breaking Digital Barriers in Education: Yamoransa Model Lab 1.1 Dedicated in Assin Kushea

Published on January 30th

In a bold step towards transforming access to quality digital and STEAM education in rural Ghana, the Assin Kushea community in the Assin North District of the Central Region welcomed a new era of learning with the commissioning of Yamoransa Model Lab 1.1. The beginning of 2026 marked a significant milestone as the facility was officially dedicated and handed over to the community on Monday, 19th January 2026, adding to the existing YM Lab 1 in the region and strengthening efforts to advance students’ digital literacy and STEAM education.

The Promoter, Sir Samuel Esson Jonah, and Nana Kojo Esson Ofori I, the Co-Promoter, together with the Helping Africa Foundation (HAF), the project’s funders, and IMPLEMENTERS, the project managers, led this important milestone.

With the rapid pace of technological advancement, digital literacy has become fundamental to modern learning, reading, and writing. This underscores the purpose of the ultra-modern lab, which has been designed to support every child’s need to excel in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Yamoransa Model Lab 1.1 has been built to serve a student population of over 2,000 learners from seven beneficiary schools, while remaining accessible to schools in neighbouring communities. The facility is focused on inspiring excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education.

Yamoransa Model Lab 1.1 features a 58-seater Edulab, a robotics makerspace, AR/VR tools, a 3D printer, a waiting area, and gender and disability-friendly washrooms. The entire facility is powered by a 12kVA solar energy system, with 24-hour CCTV surveillance installed to enhance security.

One of the dominant challenges confronting education in the Assin North District, according to the District Assembly, is student truancy, an issue also present in Assin Kushea. Speaking to IMPLEMENTERS, Mr. Collins Kyeremanteng, a representative of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and a member of the Yamoransa Model Development Committee, noted that the presence of the lab introduces a new dimension to teaching and learning. He expressed confidence that the facility would spark students’ interest, encourage attendance, and make STEAM education more engaging and enjoyable.

Assin Kushea now stands hopeful about the transformative impact this lab will have on ICT education and the overall development of its children. A parent and teacher in the community shared her excitement, noting that her sons would directly benefit from the lab. As an educator, she welcomed the advancement of STEAM education and expressed delight that her children would now experience technologies such as computers and robotics, which they previously encountered only in textbooks. She added that one of her sons enjoys repairing gadgets, including mobile phones, and believes the lab will further nurture his curiosity, creativity, and innovative skills.

Through access to the lab’s resources, students will benefit from efforts to bridge literacy and digital gaps through STEAM education, promote educational equity, and empower young people with essential technological skills, an important step toward shaping their academic journeys and future careers.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Ahunabobrim Nana Prah Agyensem IV, Paramount Chief of Assin Kushea; Nana Kojo Esson Ofori I, Mawirehene of Owirenkyiman; Chiefs and Queenmothers; the District Assembly; leadership of the Ghana Education Service; leadership of the Helping Africa Foundation; IMPLEMENTERS; TECHAiDE; school authorities; and members of the Kushea community.
