Student outcomes

All Ghanaian students take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the end of Junior High School to determine their Senior High School placements. It is a key indicator of a school's ability to prepare students. Since the introduction of the YM Lab, partner schools have improved notably. While non-beneficiary schools improved from 67.0% to 78.4%, beneficiary schools grew faster, a gain directly attributable to the YM Lab.

Gender equity

Girls in Ghana often face extra barriers to studying STEM subjects, and exam performance is one of the clearest signs of whether that gap is closing. In YM Lab communities, it's closing fast. Non-beneficiary girls improved from 68.5% to 79.2% over the same period. Beneficiary girls now pass at a rate 17.8 points higher than beneficiary boys, a gain attributed to the YM Lab.

Teaching quality

A lab is only as good as the teaching that happens inside it, so assessors sat in on real lessons rather than simply asking teachers how they felt. Learner-centred methods, where pupils actively participate rather than copy from the board, are one of the clearest signs of a strong classroom. These methods have yielded an results directly attributable to the YM Lab.
