YM Lab 2 Gbawe

A modern digital learning centre in Gbawe, Accra, to improve access to technology and provide hands-on experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Developed by the Helping Africa Foundation, TECHAiDE, IMPLEMENTERS, and local leaders, the lab will serve 3 schools and benefit over 275 students in the community.

A vision expands to Accra

Following the successful installation of the ICT Centre in Yamoransa, Dr. Deborah Rose visited the L&A Memorial Academy in Accra during one of her trips to Ghana. The school was co-founded by Japhet Aryiku, Executive Director of the Helping Africa Foundation, and his sister, Grace Asiam, in honour of their parents.

An empty lab to digital opportunity

When Dr. Rose learned that the school’s computer lab contained only one nonfunctioning desktop computer and several unusable laptops, she asked TECHAiDE to conduct a needs assessment, with the goal of establishing a second ICT Center modeled on the one in Yamoransa. Kafui Prebbie and his team subsequently installed a 35-seat computer learning lab. Once again, U.S. Ambassador Robert Jackson was among the dignitaries who attended the dedication ceremony, held on July 13, 2018.

Lab 2 grows into a hub for learning

Like the flagship centre in Yamoransa, this facility—known as Lab 2—has continued to evolve in response to the school’s needs. In addition to the computer learning lab and the Maker Space, it now includes a Home Economics Centre, newly installed solar panels, the fully equipped Dr. J. A. Stolwijk Science Laboratory and, most recently, a Pre-Technical Skills Laboratory and a Language Lab. The school serves 275 students: 165 girls and 110 boys.

Learning begins with a healthy start

One of the school’s most valued initiatives is its free breakfast program, which ensures that every student begins the day with a nutritious meal. A recently updated kitchen supports this daily service, helping staff prepare and serve meals more efficiently while strengthening the school’s commitment to student well-being and readiness to learn.
