YM Lab 13 Damongo

A modern digital learning centre in Damongo to improve access to technology and provide hands-on experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Developed by the Helping Africa Foundation, TECHAiDE, IMPLEMENTERS, the Ghana Education Service, the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, and local leaders, the lab will serve 10 schools and benefit over 4,000 students in the community.

Presidential leadership and a community-led vision

H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana and a native of Damongo, is the Promoter of Yamoransa Model Lab 13. He personally designed the facility’s layout and helped initiate the project, bringing a clear understanding of the community’s needs to its development. His leadership helped translate the idea into a purpose-built centre where students, teachers and community members can learn, collaborate and explore new possibilities through technology.

Responding to the need

A needs assessment conducted by the TECHAiDE team identified the importance of establishing the 13th Yamoransa Model Lab in Damongo, in Ghana’s Savannah Region. The assessment informed a sustainable, shared learning facility designed to improve access to digital resources in an underserved community and move students beyond theory into hands-on learning. The project builds on the Yamoransa Model Labs Programme, supported by the Helping Africa Foundation, and places modern educational technology within reach of selected local schools.

A milestone dedication

The Yamoransa Model Lab 13 was dedicated on Saturday, May 23, 2026, by the Helping Africa Foundation, TECHAiDE, and IMPLEMENTERS, in collaboration with the Office of the President of Ghana. The ceremony included national and local officials, project partners, and students. Dignitaries present included President Mahama, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu (Minister for Education), Hon. George Opare Addo (Minister for Youth Development), and Hon. Adam Mutawakilu (Managing Director of Ghana Water Company Limited). After the ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling, President Mahama toured the center, interacted with students, explored the Asanka learning platform, and tested a virtual reality headset. He encouraged students to make full use of the facility, praising the partners for their work in promoting digital learning and productive citizenship.

A model for wider impact

The dedication marked more than the opening of a building: it demonstrated what is possible when government, philanthropy, technical partners and communities work together. At the event, the Minister for Education requested a costed proposal for 20 additional Yamoransa Model Labs, signalling strong interest in extending technology-enabled learning to more communities! Lab 13 now stands as a sustainable platform for creativity, critical thinking and innovation—and as a practical model for expanding inclusive digital education across Ghana.
